Getting started
Why does Rensa ask me to choose Macintosh HD?
Mac App Store apps can only read what you give them. Choosing Macintosh HD once lets Rensa measure the whole disk. It remembers your choice, and you can pick a smaller folder instead from Scan › Access.
Should I turn on Full Disk Access?
It's optional but recommended. Without it macOS hides Mail, Messages, Safari and a few other folders, and they show up as locked in Rensa. Open Scan › Access… and press "Give Full Disk Access", then turn on Rensa in System Settings. Rensa notices when you come back. Rensa only reads names and sizes, and nothing leaves your Mac.
Why doesn't Rensa's total match Finder?
Finder counts "available" space including what macOS can free by itself (purgeable space, such as local snapshots). Rensa shows both. The part Rensa can't see inside, like snapshots and folders only macOS can read, is listed as "Not visible to Rensa" under System Data instead of being guessed.
Cleaning safely
What is safe to remove?
Items labelled "Safe to remove" rebuild themselves, like caches, build data and old installers. Items labelled "In use, check first" belong to an app or a project; remove them in that app instead if you still use it. Large and old files are never preselected.
I removed something by mistake. Can I get it back?
Yes, as long as you haven't emptied the Trash. Open the Basket and use Put Back under Recently Removed, or press Undo right after removing. Cloud files that were freed download again when you open them.
Why won't Rensa remove a certain file?
The safety check says why in the inspector. Rensa never removes system files, other users' files, the Photos library, data managed by Mail or Messages, or a piece of something larger like an app, an AI model or a git repository. It also keeps files that changed after the scan; scan again with ⌘R.
Freeing a OneDrive or Dropbox file fails
Some cloud services decide themselves when a file may be freed, for example while it is still uploading. In Finder, Control-click the file and choose Remove Download, or try again once it has finished syncing.
Apps
How do I uninstall an App Store app?
macOS protects apps installed by the App Store or an installer. Rensa removes their leftovers; drag the app itself to the Trash in Finder, and macOS asks for your password. Apps with their own uninstaller, Homebrew casks and Setapp apps get a hint on how to remove them properly.
